Pregnancy & Postpartum Dealing with Emotions Without Condemnation

I came across a book my friend gave me called Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero. At first I thought I had my emotions in order, yet as a mother of three and a newborn, my emotions were all over the place, especially speaking up for myself to doctors when I wanted to be heard about what mattered to me..


Reading this book opened my heart to how much I still need to work on my emotions in order to mature spiritually.


I think it is important to be aware of our emotions when we become pregnant or have children because our emotions get the best of us. If we don't, they rule us.


It's important to know that in order to care for our little ones and for ourselves, we need to be healthy. We need to care for ourselves. Our feelings play a major role in our motherhood stage. Babies and children respond to how we act and behave, so as Christian mothers, being aware of what we are feeling needs to be examined often, but how do we do that?


Here are some tips that I learned during my pregnancy over time and what God showed me about my feelings.

Examine Your Heart

Examining the heart means being self aware. Self awareness is having the conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires. The process can be uncomfortable but it leads to greater understanding of who you are. It is the why, what, where how you feel about your emotions, motives and desires.


When we become aware of our emotions and lean into them with God’s help, and let's be clear it is NOTan easy process, it leads us into becoming the woman and mother God created us to be from the beginning. ,


But how do you do this?

I went to scripture. The bible says, “But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭15:18‬ ‭CSB‬‬ (Christian Standard Bible)


When I read and heard this scripture, it made me think about the way I am managing my emotions. Are my emotions controlling me or am I controlling my emotions? During pregnancy there are so many feelings that come up because of physiological changes that are happening. When I shared my testimony. I spoke on how my mood and feelings would switch quickly.


Then I remembered how David went through his emotions and was led to Psalm 42:5. This is where I took the time to examine my heart and ask where these emotions are coming from? We have so many examples of people in the Bible who express their emotions, but they don’t leave it there or hate themselves for having feelings. They go to God and set their request before Him.


I've noticed when it comes to our emotions, we tend to deny how you are feeling. God gave us emotions to express ourselves.


Healthy Emotional Spirituality by Peter Scazzero has helped me to be aware of my emotions as well as and to not condemn myself for having emotions.
